The California Health Report at healthycal.org is an independent, non-profit journalism project covering health and health policy throughout the state. Our goal is to connect the community, the Capitol and the places in between with high-quality journalism. We focus on reporting from places that don’t tend to make the front pages of the newspaper or the nightly newscast, regularly producing in-depth stories about health care, health disparities, children’s health and justice and violence. Our blog, Up Close, covers developments in policy and research on these important and ever-evolving issues.

Meet the Editors
Veteran California journalist Daniel Weintraub is editor in chief and project director of the California Health Report. A native Californian, he grew up in San Diego and graduated with a degree in economics from San Diego State University. Daniel covered the state Capitol and California for more than 20 years for the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, the Sacramento Bee and the New York Times. He has reported on the careers of four governors and closely followed the state’s fiscal condition plus health, education, energy and many other issues. He appears frequently as an expert on public and commercial radio and on television. He is the author of “Party of One,” a book about the career of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Daniel is a big believer in the Internet as a transforming force in journalism. He was the author of the first blog by a print journalist in California when he created the California Insider at the Sacramento Bee in 2003. He was also the host of the Conversation, a weekly feature on the Bee’s Sunday opinion pages that encouraged interaction and engagement on the major issues of the day.
