More than 3 million Californians get coverage through ACA

March 13, 2014

More than 3 million Californians have enrolled in private or public health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, exceeding projections made before enrollment began last fall, officials said Thursday.

“We are seeing strong numbers,” said Peter Lee, executive director of Covered California, the agency that set up the new online insurance marketplace where people can sign up for coverage and get federal subsidies to reduce the cost. “We have a lot of work still to do.”

Open enrollment for private plans in the new system closes on March 31.

Lee said that through March 9, 920,000 people had completed an application for coverage and picked a private plan. Another 1.1 million people have been determined by Covered California to be eligible for Medi-Cal, the state and federal health program for the poor. And nearly 1 million others have signed up for Medi-Cal through the counties, the state’s own application portal, or have been moved into the program after getting care through county plans that were paid for with federal money as part of a transition to the Affordable Care Act.
