California seniors need twice the federal poverty level to meet basic needs, report says

California’s elder residents need far more money for basic needs than the federal poverty index suggests, according to new research from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. The center’s “Elder Index” shows that both singles and couples age 65 and older who rent or have a mortgage need more than twice the amount established by the federal poverty guidelines to meet basic living expenses.
