I've spent well over a year acting as my father's primary caregiver and I can atest to the burn-out you start to feel between the pull of your parent and your kids and family. It started out fine and I felt as though I could handle the stress, but the physical distance between his home and mine just started to weigh on me every day I drove from work. What's worse is I felt guilty for being at work 8 to 9 hours without seeing him even though he was and still is fairly active. I even went so far as to buy him a prepaid, senior phone I saw advertised from Tracfone/SVC - he doesn't drive much anymore but I figured something portable for him to carry in case of emergencies couldn't hurt. The guilt and the time splits are still piling up and I can only hope that other family members jump in soon.

This exact scenario played out with my elder client who was the sole caregiver for his very dimentia wife. He did not tend to his medical needs, which lead to accute hypertension that dropped his kidneys to 10% function--causing him to go onto kidney dialysis for the rest of his life. The toll is high to the individual (3 days per week, 10a - 3:30p by time leave & return to house, not to mention a severely restricted diet) and society ($42k per month Kaiser picks up for the dialysis).
