HealthyCal.org is an independent, non-profit journalism project supported with initial funding from the California Endowment. The site’s mission is to inform Californians about public health and community health issues, to engage readers in an ongoing conversation about matters ranging from health care policy to land-use, transportation, environment, criminal justice and economic policy, and to show how all of these things are connected.
Our policy coverage of the Capitol and elsewhere is led by veteran journalist Daniel Weintraub, who is the editor and director of HealthyCal.org. Weintraub also leads a team of contributing journalists and community members who share stories and voices of people throughout the state who are dealing with these issues in their daily lives and work. These pages will highlight the policy challenges California faces while also celebrating the success stories of people throughout the state who have taken the initiative to improve life in their own communities.
We encourage comments on our stories and conversation in our forums. Our goal is to build an online community where civil and spirited discourse are the norm. For that reason we ask that all members of the community use a full name and hometown to identify themselves, and that our community members engage each other in a respectful manner. HealthyCal.org is a safe haven from the anonymous, often angry and hateful dialogue that serves as commentary on many web sites today. If that appeals to you, please join our community and join the conversation.
